ROYAN
This is a large resort at the confluence of the Gironde Estuary and the Atlantic Ocean and launched the fashion for sea bathing in the 19th century. It was almost totally destroyed in 1945 and now boasts post-war innovations in architecture. The daringly upswept lines of Notre-Dame Church now dominate the seafront and the five beaches sheltered from westerly breezes. The "Grande Conche", the most famous of the beaches, is a curving strand with more than two kilometres of fine sand.
Jardins du Monde: A flower and leisure park with tropical greenhouse containing a huge orchid exhibition, a collection of bonsai, theme gardens, Louisiana forest, bamboo maze, esplanade of fountains and electric boats for hire.
Boat Trips: Daily trips to the Cordouan Lighthouse, grand tour of the Gironde Estuary. March to October.
Market: Large indoor market selling a wide range of fresh produce, open every day - well worth a visit.
